How Do Flat Roofs Drain? (And Why It Matters)
Here's a fact that surprises most people: flat roofs aren't actually flat. They're carefully built to move water β and when that drainage system fails, it's the number one cause of flat roof failure.
"Flat" Roofs Have a Slight Slope
A properly built flat roof has a gentle pitch β usually about ΒΌ inch of fall per foot β designed to guide water toward drainage points. It looks flat to the eye, but every square foot is subtly angled to keep water moving. That slope is created either by the structure itself or by tapered insulation installed beneath the membrane.
The Three Ways Flat Roofs Drain
1. Internal Drains
The most common system on large commercial roofs. Drains are placed at the low points of the roof and connect to pipes that run down through the inside of the building. They're efficient and hidden β but they clog with debris, which is one of the most common problems we find.
2. Scuppers
Openings cut into the perimeter wall or parapet that let water flow off the edge, often into a downspout. Scuppers are simple and reliable, but they can get blocked by leaves and debris just like drains.
3. Gutters
On smaller or lower commercial buildings, water drains to the edge and into gutters. Keeping gutters and downspouts clear is essential β clogged gutters back water up onto the roof.
Why Drainage Is the #1 Cause of Flat Roof Failure
When any of these systems clog or fail, water has nowhere to go β and it ponds. Standing water is a flat roof's worst enemy. It accelerates membrane breakdown, adds structural load (water weighs ~5 lbs per square foot per inch of depth), and in Toledo's climate it freezes, expands, and pries the membrane apart at every weak point. Water that sits more than 48 hours is actively shortening your roof's life. Why flat roofs leak β
How to Keep Your Drainage Working
- Keep drains, scuppers, and gutters clear β debris is the leading cause of ponding
- Inspect after storms β leaves and debris collect fast in fall and after wind events
- Fix ponding at the source β adding tapered insulation in chronic low spots restores proper slope
- Get on a maintenance program β drain clearing is a standard part of professional roof maintenance
For gutter cleaning and exterior drainage maintenance, we recommend our trusted local partner Toledo Window & Gutters. For the roof drainage itself β drains, scuppers, ponding fixes, and tapered insulation β that's our specialty. See our maintenance programs β
